OUR MISSION

Why We Created Reefwise

Most people walk through the aquarium seeing beautiful creatures they can't name, in ecosystems they barely understand. We believe that's a missed opportunity — for wonder, for education, and for empathy toward our oceans.

Reefwise was founded by a team of marine biology educators and travel writers based in Singapore. Our editorial process involves marine scientists, dive instructors, and experienced aquarium educators. We write guides we'd want ourselves.

Our goal is simple: give you the knowledge to transform a 2-hour walk into a lifetime memory. Every guide we publish is independently researched, factually verified, and updated annually.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer This website is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Singapore Aquarium, S.E.A. Aquarium, Resorts World Sentosa or any official operator. We are an independent editorial project producing practical educational content for curious visitors.

The Marine Life Encyclopedia is exceptional. As someone with a background in biology, I still learned things I didn't know. The conservation context for each species is particularly well-written and moving.

MARINE EDUCATION

Singapore's Ocean Neighbours

The waters around Singapore and the broader Indo-Pacific are home to some of the most diverse marine ecosystems on Earth. Here's a glimpse of the remarkable life you'll encounter — and learn to understand deeply with a Reefwise guide.

Manta Ray
🦈 Manta Ray (Mobula birostris)
The world's largest ray, with wingspans up to 7 metres. Feeds exclusively on microscopic plankton filtered through specialised gill plates. Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to overfishing and gill plate trade.
Sea Turtle
🐢 Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
One of the largest hard-shelled sea turtles, they navigate thousands of kilometres using Earth's magnetic field. Found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Classified as Endangered — primarily threatened by plastic pollution and habitat loss.
Clownfish
🐠 Clownfish (Amphiprioninae)
Famous for their symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, clownfish are immune to the stinging cells that paralyse other fish. They are protandrous hermaphrodites — all clownfish are born male, and the dominant fish in a group can change to female.
Jellyfish
🪼 Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)
Ethereally beautiful and evolutionarily ancient — jellyfish have existed for over 500 million years. Moon jellyfish lack a brain, heart, or bones. They navigate currents through rhythmic pulsing, and their bioluminescent glow has inspired medical research into genetic tagging.
Octopus
🐙 Reef Octopus (Octopus cyanea)
Among the most intelligent invertebrates on Earth, capable of solving puzzles, using tools, and camouflaging with extraordinary precision across both colour and texture — despite being completely colourblind. Each arm operates semi-independently with its own neural cluster.
Coral Reef
🪸 Coral Reef Ecosystem
Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support approximately 25% of all marine species. Often called the "rainforests of the sea." Singapore's reefs, while small, host over 250 coral species — remarkable for their proximity to a major urban port.
Seahorse
🐴 Seahorse (Hippocampus spp.)
The only vertebrate species where the male carries and gives birth to young — up to 2,000 per pregnancy. Seahorses are monogamous and perform elaborate daily greeting dances with their partners. They are under increasing threat from traditional medicine demand and habitat destruction.
Shark
🦈 Leopard Shark (Triakis semifasciata)
A docile, bottom-dwelling shark that poses no significant threat to humans. Sharks have remained virtually unchanged for 450 million years, predating dinosaurs by over 200 million years. As apex predators, they are essential regulators of marine food chains.
